The importance of effective design and branding to small business

design thinking

There is a famous quote from genius Steve Jobs when it comes to design. He said, “The design is not just what it looks like and feels like, the design is how it works.”

As a Graphic Designer, I completely agree, and who am I to disagree with Mr Jobs? Every day, we see considerable value and the impact that design as a whole has on small businesses and the importance it plays on a brand’s public perception.

Effective design essentially not only boosts your positioning in a given market by improving your brand’s image but also ultimately leads to a better customer experience in more ways than one. Great design can drive revenue increases, boost credibility and can also reduce costs if done right and with great consideration.

I’ll break this down simply.

Increase your bottom line through effective design

Great designs can ultimately drive a revenue increase for small businesses by attracting new customers whilst also improving client retention and satisfaction.

Effectively designed marketing material has the potential to leave a lasting impression on consumers and keep your business at the forefront of their minds when next seeking the products, experiences or services that you offer.

Everything from your logo and website to stationery and your social pages need to be carefully thought out in order to create a positive memorable experience for potential customers.

Let’s face it, we are visual creatures. Strong, visually appealing designs will enhance a brand’s public perception and credibility. If you have a strong, consistent brand with clear messaging, you will have greater recognition and credibility in a crowded market, not to mention a greater chance at maintaining loyalty with existing customers.

Quality design can save you time and money

Investing in quality design is crucial. A poorly designed website, for example, leads to frustration and an overall negative user experience. You don’t want to be remembered for the wrong reasons. In most markets, there is an abundance of competitors for the user to explore and explore they will.

Those who invest in quality designs will be set apart from the competition and have a much better chance of attracting future customers, gaining their trust and ultimately, making more sales.

Future-proofing and allowing for flexibility in your business are critical for growth, and design is no exception. For example, if you wish to one day expand your products or services, the ability to update and reflect this on your website with ease needs to be thoughtfully considered in the initial process. This in turn will reduce the investment in such updates in the future.

In essence, design has the potential to translate even the most convoluted of subjects into an easy-to-follow, informative and exciting piece of communication. From attracting potential clients to your website, to boosting engagement with your existing client base, it can pave the way to a unique and memorable customer journey.
