Eco-soap start-up urges Aussies to shop sustainably with new pop-up

Eco-soap startup Single Use Ain’t Sexy (SUAS) urges Aussies to shop sustainably this holiday season and “cut the Christmas crap” with its new pop-up store in Toorak, Melbourne.

Up to 20 million unwanted gifts and packaging end up in landfills or stocked up each year, and SUAS founder Josh Howard says the pop-up will allow consumers to conveniently top up their hand soap without the need for packaging and single-use plastic bottles.

“We wanted to step up to empower Aussies to invest in gifts that last,” Howard told Inside FMCG. “Launching our pop-up store is also a fantastic way to pull the brand out from our Instagram feed and into the real world so people can touch, smell and feel our products.”

The brand’s product range is described as “Berocca for hand wash” since the soap is a concentrated effervescent tablet that dissolves in a glass container with water.

“Each tablet you use saves another single-use plastic soap bottle from an Aussie landfill,” Howard said.

Howard told FMCG that he felt ready to launch a pop-up store after getting sold out twice within the brand’s debuting year and being able to reach thousands of customers, including households, restaurants, businesses, gyms, clinics, and other locations.

“With so many people using our soap daily, it felt like the perfect time to start connecting with them in real life through our physical bricks-and-mortar store,” he said.

Aside from the brand’s soap line, the Melbourne pop-up would also feature other sustainable and ethical brands, including Soda Stream, Hidden Sea Wines, Heaps Normal, Coconut Bowls, Great Wrap, Dsmile, Square, and Fuji Film, among others.

Howard added that customers could look forward to new products, collaborations, and limited edition launches next year. The company will also continue its focus on building its corporate and hospitality footprint across the country.
