As small-business owners, our superpower is agility and flexibility. The ability to navigate by the seat of our pants is a consistent muscle we flex. However, in the current landscape of heightened uncertainty, providing stability to ourselves and our teams has never been more crucial.
Because we are so busy in the everyday workings of our businesses, many of us skip the essential steps of establishing foundational practices that not only provide security and grounding into our work life but can also result in better wellbeing outcomes that alleviate unnecessary stress.
Throughout my two-decade career as an organisational consultant, I’ve identified five pillars integral to driving organisational health and wellbeing. I like to call it the MAGIC framework. While it takes time to explore and implement the formula and strategies, there has never been a more important time to do it. Far from making us less productive, the MAGIC formula will allow you to understand how we can bring our whole selves to the office (virtual or not) and take our needs and humanity into account also.
Let’s delve into some stability that the MAGIC framework can provide:
M is for Meaning: In the hustle and bustle of a fast-paced environment, we often overlook the importance of considering the meaning behind our actions. Contemplating why we do what we do can serve as a tether to something meaningful. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming; instead, it can be broken down into small steps. What constitutes a good day, a successful project, or a significant win? These questions provide insights into what matters and motivates us, and this tethers us to something and this feels good.
A is for Authentic: In a time where pace is relentless, authenticity tends to get lost. Making space for the individual behind the position is crucial. It doesn’t require a complete overhaul of practices; simple steps like allowing team members to share highs and lows during meetings can foster a sense of authenticity. Ensuring everyone’s voice is heard contributes to psychological safety in the workplace, because we’ve all been in meetings where only the loudest voices are heard.
G is for Ground Rules: Clarity in ground rules are paramount. Uncertainty about communication, conflict resolution, or meeting protocols can leave employees feeling uneasy. Establishing and communicating these ground rules not only ensures everyone is on the same page but also makes us more efficient.
I is for Interaction: Acknowledging that we are currently in the middle of a loneliness crisis, underscores the importance of human connection. Committing to fostering this connection, even if it feels a bit clunky, contributes significantly to a healthy workforce. Feeling part of a tribe during challenging times enhances overall health and well-being.
C is for Curiosity: In times of unprecedented change, embracing new perspectives is key. Encouraging blue-sky thinking and providing a safe space for alternative solutions without fear of retribution fosters a culture of curiosity. Rather than just looking at the most obvious option, when do you and your team make space to consider all the possibilities?
During uncertain times, it’s essential to double down on practices that ensure the wellbeing of our workforce and ourselves. Taking the time to assess what truly matters, defining routines, understanding team connections, and embracing a new perspective through the MAGIC framework isn’t just about change for the sake of it but crafting strategies tailored to support your unique business.
