The digital scams costing small businesses

NBN scams, scammers

Nowadays it feels like every second person online peddles a tale of effortless riches, and small-business owners find themselves navigating a minefield of scams, crowded spaces, and dubious success stories. The allure of effortlessly scaling a business to unparalleled heights is tempting, but is it realistic?

A closer look at the claims

The pitch is almost always the same. Creators position themselves as the expert that is going to effortlessly scale you or your business to untold financial success, often through selling digital products or a ‘one-of-a-kind marketing funnel’. However, a few glaring issues emerge:

  • Verification of success: Who’s scrutinising these extravagant claims? The digital world lacks a universal truth metre, providing ample space for anyone to make grand claims.
  • Misleading simplicity: It’s hard not to put your faith in someone when they make it sound so simple and even affordable, but when you walk away with little to show for it, who’s really pocketing the dollars?

Standing out in a crowded market

The rise of drop-shipping and AI-products has saturated the market while amplifying consumer scepticism regarding quality. For established small businesses this isn’t just frustrating, – it’s an ever-present threat to their bottom line.

Identifying the authentic

So, how do you navigate the minefield?

Question the visuals: Just because a self-proclaimed entrepreneur peddling their services or course poses in a jet or boasts about luxury cars doesn’t mean their success is genuine. Studios in LA offer jet plane sets for photo shoots, enabling anyone to create an illusion of wealth. Visual evidence can be as easily manufactured as clicking a booking link.

Question claims: Seen the Sydney Sweeney saga? A dietitian claimed to be the actress’s nutritionist, helping Sweeney land her dream role. Sweeney’s rebuttal? A comment on the post, “I don’t know you and kraft mac’n’cheese is for life”. She isn’t wrong, but this underscores the need to question everything you encounter online.

Verify engagement authenticity: Comments and thousands of followers seem legitimate, but approach with caution. Websites like Buzzoid and InstaFollowers facilitate the buying of followers, while Buzzvoice allow users to purchase custom comments. The generic ‘Wow!’ or ‘Great post’ is as easy to attain as a coffee (and much cheaper).

Genuinely elevate your business in a cluttered space: In today’s saturated marketplace, distinguishing your business amidst low-quality products is a challenge. But, with the right approach, it’s one you can rise to.

Embrace authenticity, quality, and education: Centre your strategy on authenticity, championing quality, and enlightening your customers. It costs nothing to shift your focus from generic sales pushes to a spotlight on the innovation and craftsmanship that goes into your offering, and connect your audience with the stories behind your brand to bolster consumer trust and loyalty.

Invest in your brand: Customers gravitate towards brands, not merely products. It’s vital that everything, from products to marketing, mirrors your core values. If you don’t have the resources to invest with a branding expert, start smaller and ensure you have a predetermined set of fonts, colours and tone/visual styles that you’ll stick to. Consistency in your presentation boosts your stance and recognition.

Time, skill, and financial investment: The reality is success in today’s digital arena requires investment: not just financial but also your time and expertise. It’s highly unlikely you can get away with spending nothing, but taking a look at your finances, what is driving returns, and spending strategically is critical.

Skimping on any of these essentials can stifle growth and diminish your business’s potential impact. While success isn’t free, the investment you make in your business is the bedrock of long-term prosperity and resilience.
