UK ice cream brand rides TikTok wave to launch in Australia

Little Moons – a mochi ice cream brand which became a viral phenomenon on TikTok in 2021, turning it into the fastest-growing ice cream brand in the UK – has officially launched in Australia.

The brand uses mochi, a Japanese rice flour dough that is steamed and pounded, to create a distinctive texture that has contributed to its popularity in the UK. Another advantage of using this base is the fact that it is gluten free, and Little Mooms and do not use any artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives in the products.

The branded was founded by brother-and-sister team Howard and Vivien Wong (pictured in this story’s feature image) in 2010. Howard and Vivien’s parents ran an Asian bakery, instilling in them a passion for good food made with quality ingredients. Inspired by a treat they sampled in Japan, Howard and Vivien experimented with an ice cream machine to recreate what they had enjoyed so much, and came up with the recipe for what is now Little Moons.

Starting out wholesaling to renowned London restaurants such as Nobu and Sushi Samba and high street outlets such as Yo! Sushi, the pair launched the retail version of Little Moons in 2015 and now produce 180 million mochi a year that are sold in over 20 countries.

“We know Australia is a nation of ice cream lovers, so we’re thrilled to be working with Woolworths to bring Little Moons mochi bites Down Under,” Co-founder Howard said. “Little Moons’ success comes down to its uniqueness – brightly-coloured, bite-sized treats that offer the familiarity of ice-cream with a soft and chewy layer of mochi.

“[They’re] perfect for any occasion, whether that’s a day-time treat or a little after dinner indulgence, once you try them, I promise you’ll never look back!” Howard added.

The brand is launching in Australia with three of its most popular flavours – Vegan Belgian Chocolate & Hazelnut and Vegan Tropical Passionfruit & Mango are already available at Woolworths, with Honey Roasted Pistachio to follow soon
