New South Wales is set to celebrate the NSW Small Business Month this October. The month-long program, which starts tomorrow, will be packed with events tailored to the interests and needs of small businesses across the state.

Over 300 events are set to be held through the different NSW Small Business Month Expos across the state. These will aim to help small-business owners sharpen their business skills, gain new insights, save money, or rebrand their business.

In addition, small-business leaders will have an opportunity to interact with business experts, as well as connect with government agencies, large organisations, and other small businesses as a means to help them achieve their business goals.

NSW Small Business Commissioner Chris Lamont stated, “There are over 300 events on offer, where small businesses can meet experts who can assist them and dive into topics like AI for business, financial management, import/export strategies, protecting creative assets and more.”

The Commissioner also believes that NSW Small Business Month is an opportunity for small businesses to keep abreast of the new workplace laws that came into effect this year. Such changes would include new rights for casual employees to request permanent employment and employees’ right to disconnect outside work hours.

“The Commission has repeated calls for stronger protections for small businesses in mixed-use strata schemes. Businesses affected by strata or broader property services issues are encouraged to contact the Commission for support and to make use of our Retail Tenancy guide,” Lamont added.

In related news, the NSW Small Business Commissioner also shared that the Productivity Commission has released a report into Early Childhood Education and Care. “It was encouraging to see the concerns raised by my office acknowledged in the report, especially as many providers are small businesses. I particularly welcome the recommendation to conduct an independent review of the National Quality Framework to ensure regulatory requirements remain fit for purpose and supported by evidence,” he said.

The commissioner also announced the launch of a new course in November to support small businesses selling to the NSW Government. Registrations for the current Selling to the NSW Government Micro Skills online course through TAFE NSW will close on 31 October 2024.
