With the new year well underway, for some returning to work is daunting. A little constructive preparation of the working environment will help set a warm and welcoming tone for your employees to feel motivated, productive and more satisfied.
Hold a reflection session
A new year is the perfect time to start fresh. Reflecting on 2018 is both a great way to address and resolve issues and also an opportunity to appreciate the contributions and achievements of staff.
Each person plays a role in the success of a business. Remember to thank colleagues too, whether for helping with that challenging project or for taking the time to make you a coffee when you were struggling at your desk the day after the Christmas party.
Make the office a welcoming place
There’s nothing more dampening than returning to a dreary workplace after the highs of the festive season. A friendly, inviting working environment can make a huge difference to the mood of everybody in the office.
Some tips for revitalising the office include:
- Add a splash of colour with decorative artwork.
- Introduce some indoor plants for a breath of fresh air.
- Stock the kitchen with fresh fruit, coffee, tea and snacks.
- Make sure the office has appropriate lighting, as this helps improve energy, concentration and is better for eyesight.
Organise your space
It can be a challenge to get back on track when you return to work. Starting the year with a clean desk will help you stay organised and on top of tasks.
Make sure you keep your space organised with these tips:
- Get rid of unnecessary clutter.
- Organise your documents. Remove unnecessary paperwork and purge any digital files taking up virtual space.
- Create a social space or relaxing work area. A few well-placed couches and coffee tables can make the office feel like home and help to reduce stress and improve comfort.
- Have you considered an open plan office? It’s a great way to encourage employees to interact and collaborate.
Create a team goal for 2019
Goals give people something to be a part of and look forward to. Think outside the square and don’t limit yourself to achieving a higher sales figure. Aim to set a feel-good goal that encourages everyone to contribute and be involved.
Encourage collaboration and team bonding in the office by setting these goals:
- Organise a group sports team. This is not only a fun activity for the office but also a great chance to encourage comradery and improve teamwork between co-workers.
- Create a fundraising goal. Helping out a local charity is great for motivation and also improves the profile of the business.
- Build up a little rivalry in the workplace. Try rewarding the accomplishments of different departments with small incentives to get employees excited about starting the new year.
Start 2019 the way you intend to end it. It only takes a little planning to help set the office up for a successful new year.
