For introverted business owners, the idea of stepping into the spotlight can feel overwhelming.
As a publicist who works with introverts, I have seen how PR can make a huge difference in increasing their visibility, credibility and business growth when it feels aligned and authentic.
Let’s look at some examples of introverted business owners who have successfully used PR and a simple framework to help you do the same without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out.
Case study 1
Client A was eager to find an alternative to solely relying on social media for lead generation. They also wanted to build their credibility as a newer business owner. They had used a little PR in the past, however it had been reactive instead of intentional.
Initially, we focused on podcast opportunities and guest writing because these allowed them to take control of the narrative. These opportunities allowed them to build their confidence and visibility in an authentic way. The next step was an interview with a journalist for a major news platform. With clear perspectives gained from earlier PR, the interview was a huge success and resulted in a very well-written article.
Although we could have used this article to secure additional media coverage, Client A decided to prioritise their energy levels. Instead, they featured the story on their website and social media, which significantly boosted their credibility without overstretching themselves.
Case study 2
Client B set out to increase visibility and position themselves as an industry leader through PR. In the past, they had used pay-to-play PR with minimal impact. However, Client B needed a more strategic and personalised PR approach – not just because of their ambitious visibility goals, but also because of their introversion.
To build a PR strategy that Client B could keep up with, we decided to tailor their public appearances to their specific strengths. As a podcast host, speaking came naturally, so podcast appearances were prioritised. These have since led to further opportunities, including invitations to be a guest presenter in masterclasses and paid collaborations, helping to further elevate their profile and industry credibility.
PR framework introverted business owners
If you want to explore PR while honouring your introverted nature – and avoid feeling burnt out or overwhelmed – keep these things in mind:
- Be strategic with your PR goals
Being selective with PR strategies can help an introvert to channel their limited energy into achieving their goals. There is no need to do it all. For example, to boost visibility, try podcasts and interviews, whereas to boost credibility try writing for an industry publication.
- Choose an energising topic
Picking topics that you are excited and passionate about will naturally be easier for you to talk or write about because they feel authentic. The opposite, a topic that drains you, will stifle your creativity and feel forced, which is a big “ick” for introverts.
- Leverage your strengths
Focusing on your strengths and how you best communicate will help you to protect your energy. For example, if you like talking, then focus on being a podcast guest, whereas if you communicate better by writing, then submit guest articles.
- Choose the right media outlets
Targeting outlets that align with your PR goals will make your efforts as effective and efficient as possible. For visibility, focus on high-traffic platforms. To build trust, focus instead on highly credible outlets that are trusted by your audience.
PR does not need to be overwhelming or energetically draining, even for introverted entrepreneurs. If you take a thoughtful and intentional approach, then PR can be a great tool for growing your business.
