Queensland-based family business My Berries has won this year’s Advanced Manufacturing award at the Moreton Bay Business Excellence and Innovation Awards.
Established in 2013 by Stuart and Allison McGruddy, My Berries turns surplus fresh fruits, that would have been discarded, into frozen and freeze-dried products.
The company’s specialised drying method intensifies the flavour and texture of seasonal fruit waste and helps store them at room temperature.
The dried fruits have a light and crunchy texture – much similar to popcorn. To preserve the fruit’s vitamins and antioxidants, the manufacturing process quickly after harvest.
My Berries director, Allison McGruddy, says their investment in local manufacturing has been a “win-win” for both farmers and consumers.
“After being named an #eatqld champion by the Queensland Government for supporting local farmers and the state’s agricultural sector, we are delighted to be recognised for the technical side of our business and for our product ingenuity.”
She added the company’s facility is located a “stone’s throw” from raspberry, strawberry and blackberry farms allowing them to create highly nutritious and convenient products.
“In peak season, we save deliciously ripe berries that don’t meet cosmetic supermarket specs for fresh punnets,” McGruddy said. “We cut, wash and freeze them to safeguard the quality and ensure Australian-grown options are available all year round.”
The company says it provides local farmers with a “profitable solution” for seasonal fruit waste and offers families a high-quality and safe alternative to imports.
My Berries can be found in 1200 stores nationwide while its new freeze-dried range can be found in the snack and pantry aisles.
