Five reasons to take control of your personal brand today

Living in today’s world, if you are using social media you have a digital footprint. If you have a digital footprint, you have a personal brand. It is almost unthinkable to attend an appointment without googling the person you are meeting first.

I recently read an article in the Harvard Business Review, which stated, “Taking control of your personal brand may mean the difference between an unfulfilling job and a rewarding career”. I could not agree more. What is a personal brand? It is the art of packaging yourself in a way that is marketable and of benefit to your life and livelihood. You are your greatest asset in life so why not take advantage of your self.

Here are five reasons (among many) you should take control of your personal brand today…

1. Because you can

Social media is not reserved for narcissism, pouty air kisses, and half-naked bodies. Today there are a variety of platforms available that enable you to share your ideas, stories, and achievements in a way that works for you. It is about taking control of your digital footprint and using it to benefit your career (and life). A personal website, for example, is another very simple and easy way to shape your personal brand.

2. The positive ripple effect it creates

Putting yourself out there and allowing your self to be seen and heard for who you are, is in itself a positive statement. It is publicly recognising you are of value and honoring the fact you have something to share. These are the building blocks a healthy level of self-confidence is built upon.

3. Because you are the only thing you can depend on

The world is changing at an ever-rapid rate, as new industries emerge, the old crumble. New opportunities arise as quickly as the old ways become obsolete. The only thing you can really depend on and control is yourself. Creating a personal brand can put you in a better position to adapt to change. They say it is not what you know, it is who you know. I like to add, it is not who you know, it is who you are. If you don’t put yourself out there, how do people know who you are?

4. It can broaden your horizons

Once you actively put yourself out there, you may discover a whole new world of opportunities awaiting you. Whether it is interesting brand partnerships, speaking opportunities or headhunters circling, it is a case of making it easy to be found. I remember one client saying- “my personal brand is my succession plan”. She knew there would be life after the business she was building to sell. Your personal brand is an asset no one can ever take away.

5. What better way to build a legacy

As a former international celebrity publicist, I loathed the fact images and information existed online forever. It is every publicist’s worst nightmare, there is no-where to run and no-where to hide. Now that I am dedicated to helping individuals create, shape and manage their personal brands, I see it as a great benefit. I found this beautiful proverb, “We will be known forever by the tracks we leave”. Why not leave behind a self-directed legacy.

Life is short and we only have what seems like a fleeting moment to make our mark and live our dreams. Be brave, be bold and back yourself enough to accept your personal brand does matter.
