Why New Year’s resolutions are an effective leadership tool

Once suitable New Year’s resolutions have been formulated, Dr Demartini recommends business leaders inspire “buy in” of the vision by understanding the values of team members.

Setting New Year’s resolutions is a well-established personal practice but human behaviour specialist, Dr John Demartini, maintains that business leaders are also wise to make yearly resolutions for optimum growth and success.

“A well-formulated business resolution will act as reminder of what opportunities to be on the lookout for over the coming year and which to take advantage of. When affirmed on a regular basis, resolutions act as a check-up from the neck up and help you more effectively and efficiently achieve”, he says.

The celebrated author of more than 40 books, Dr Demartini boasts over four decades of research into human behaviour and self-mastery and has delivered custom programs to corporate giants IBM and Maserati. He maintains that a wise business leader will carefully formulate resolutions that are aligned with their highest personal values. Inspiration, he maintains, is the key.

”Your forebrain (telencephalon) is for foresight, intuition and inspiration. Envision your most inspiring dreams in your mind’s eye, set resolutions that are truly congruent with what you spontaneously do daily and affirm them clearly, concisely and with inspiration and enthusiasm. This brings amazing outcomes and achievements”, he advises.

According to Dr Demartini, having a business resolution that is in harmony with your highest values will also stimulate a positive effect in colleagues and staff.

“When you are fulfilling your goals in a way that honours your highest values, others can’t help but be inspired,” he remarks. “People will naturally gravitate to you because of your innate drive and integrity; they will see the opportunity to find that drive within themselves.”

Once suitable New Year’s resolutions have been formulated, Dr Demartini recommends business leaders inspire “buy in” of the vision by understanding the values of team members. “If you want people to follow you, it is vital that you are aware of their highest values,” Dr Demartini advises. “True leadership comes from recognising the values of everyone involved, and finding a way to incorporate those needs into a common goal,” he adds.

Here’s how to formulate a New Year’s resolution for business success:

  • Set a business resolution that is aligned with your personal values.
  • Use regular affirmations or power words throughout the year to keep you aligned with this vision.
  • Be inspired and allow yourself to be clear about your business goals and enthusiastic about obtaining them.
  • Understand the personal values of colleagues and staff and communicate clearly how the common goal will help them fulfill these values.
