What to do when your boss stresses you out

Perhaps you like your job, but your boss gives you a hard time. What can you do if your current boss is stressing you out? There are a number of things an employee can do to solve this problem.

First, try to do more than what is expected from you in your role. Try to get things done ahead of time and help out your co-workers. Your boss and colleagues will notice and give you more respect.

Secondly, try to reduce any potential conflict. If you see trouble coming, try to catch it early before it becomes an argument. Use your problem-solving skills to prevent the issue escalating. Remember that communication is the key to preventing conflicts in the workplace.

When you converse with your boss, try to focus on his or her interests. If your boss likes golf, then ask them about their latest round or talk about your golfing stories. If it’s reading they’re into, ask what book they’re reading at the moment. Talk to your boss about their interests and they will appreciate you more.

Talk with your boss about any problem you’re having. Ask your boss questions about how your company is going. Ask them if you yourself need to improve on anything. Take the initiative and ask for suggestions as to how you can improve.

If nothing works, then change departments or find another place to work. There are many different jobs and places you can work so do not feel limited to just your current place of employment. People change jobs for a whole host of reasons and you need to do what is best for you.

Most people have to deal with a not-so-great boss at some stage of their working lives – the key is to find ways to reduce any conflict. Always bear in mind open communication is very important in achieving this. Be flexible and try following these suggestions. If none of them work, it’s probably time to start looking for another job.
