As part of our partnership with BEC Australia, Magic Hand Carwash (SA) participated in a DVD, Disability works in small business. In the DVD, franchisee-owner Amardeep Singh Seth spoke about the success he has had with hiring staff with disabilities through Disability Works Australia (DWA).

DWA and Magic Hand Carwash have been working together since mid-2011 and have developed an excellent relationship. DWA has assisted Amardeep to recruit staff for all three of his sites – West Lakes, Klemzig and Tea Tree Plaza (Modbury) – with positions ranging from car cleaners to cafe assistants.

DWA assisted with the recruitment of staff and coordinated all support and wage subsidies on behalf of the employer.

Dylan Allen is one of the successful employees, and has been working 15 hours per week at Magic Hand Carwash’s Klemzig site since February 2012 as a casual car cleaner.

Dylan, who has a mild learning disability, was referred to DWA by a Disability Employment Service (DES) Provider. DWA met with Dylan, assessed his suitability and arranged a trial shift to suit both himself and the employer. As Dylan had been out of work for over five years, he was very happy to undertake a work trial so he could determine that it was the field of work he was interested in.

After the work trial, Dylan was offered the position and commenced shortly after. The training undertaken by Dylan was extensive and to assist him with understanding all tasks and the quality of work required, he started off with only two tasks, cleaning wheels and door trims. Dylan is now responsible for cleaning vehicles inside and out, including washing, vacuuming and polishing wheels.

In the time he has been there, the team has seen how far Dylan has grown in not only his confidence, but also his skills and experience. After working at Magic Hand for six months, Dylan was offered a permanent part-time role.

Dylan states, ‘I really like working here. All of the staff and managers are very friendly and are always willing to help answer any questions I have. I have always felt supported, and really enjoy my job.’

Franchisee Amardeep explains, ‘Dylan has come a long way since starting at Magic Hand Carwash over 12 months ago. He has picked up the tasks that have been given to him and he has fit right in with the team here at Klemzig. He always turns up to work and is one of my best employees.’

Since Dylan has been working at Magic Hand Carwash’s Klemzig site, DWA has assisted with recruiting two additional car cleaners at West Lakes and Tea Tree Plaza, with both also offered permanent part-time work.
