The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is celebrating National Tradies Day on September 18 to highlight the fundamental contribution of Australia’s skilled tradespeople to national infrastructure and housing supply.
The industry recognition covers workers across residential construction, structural renovations, community maintenance, and post-disaster rebuilding projects nationwide.
HIA’s MD, Jocelyn Martin, said that trade apprenticeships offer secure earning potential, practical skill development, and direct pathways to business ownership.
“They build our homes, renovate and maintain existing housing, restore communities following natural disasters and help create the places where Australians live, work and raise their families,” said Martin.
She added that while construction technologies continue to evolve, automated systems will not eliminate the core requirement for qualified trade labour to supply housing for a growing population.
“Trade careers offer secure employment, strong earning potential and the chance to build something tangible that makes a real difference in people’s lives.”
“The demand for tradies remains closely linked to one of Australia’s most fundamental needs, providing homes for a growing population.”
To address ongoing workforce pressures, the HIA also published a strategic report, Australia’s Future is Built by Tradies, detailing current labour constraints across the residential building sector alongside policy recommendations for government and industry stakeholders.
