How pop-ups contribute to a sense of place in shopping centres

Connecting people with places is not a new idea but because the pandemic has changed how people gather and socialise, it’s even more important to think about how we can strengthen the connection between the community and brands in our Town Centres.

Stockland has long worked to improve communities by enriching our shopping centres in innovative and people-centric ways to bring people together and make them feel special and valued.

By understanding what makes our communities tick, why people visit our retail centres, and what they do when they are there, Stockland is well placed to create vibrant and activated centres bringing together the right experiences and pop-ups to customers in one place.

With people and place at the heart of what Stockland does, we’re exploring new and bold ways to create memorable experiences that build social interaction and create a long-lasting sense of belonging.

We’re working collaboratively with local councils and businesses to curate exciting and memorable pop-up events and activations and night markets that connect people through fun, shareable and immersive experiences.

S Connect is transforming under-used spaces, bringing thoroughfares alive, and energising shared spaces to create meaningful experiences and opportunities that enrich people’s lives.

As an example, in partnership with not-for-profit CoLocal and Wyndham City Council, local community groups and businesses, Stockland launched a pop-up park at Stockland Point Cook in Victoria to encourage community connection and help strengthen the local economy.

Located in the centre’s dining precinct on Murnong Street, the street was transformed into a fun community space with bean bags, shade and comfortable lounging spaces. Over eight weeks, the pop-up park hosted more than 270 all-age free events including movie nights, live music, craft workshops, fashion shows and cultural events, energising the local area and attracting more than 90,000 people. This is the fifth year in a row that the pop-up park has operated, bringing people together in a safe and relaxing environment to enjoy vibrant community events.

From large scale centre domination advertising campaigns to sampling, roaming, experiential and pop-up spaces S Connect can offer your business a unique opportunities as part of these new retail experiences being introduced in Stockland’s national portfolio of retail town centres. Our S Connect team also craft bespoke opportunities based on our client’s brand objectives.

Recognising that there is an appetite in the community for artisan and handmade products, Stockland is bringing another marketplace concept in-centre with the 2022 launch of a Farmers and Artisan Market at Stockland Glendale. With 120 fresh food retailers and a reach of around 250,000 people, the markets will support local farmers and artists as well as complement our existing retail mix, as well as creative unique, immersive business opportunities for pop-ups

Stockland S Connect can work with local businesses to develop bespoke placemaking initiatives with a focus on customer experiences across multiple venues and events such as market nights that reinvigorate community connection, reactivate local economies and create places the community can feel ownership of and love.

By partnering with S Connect, with a focus on your objectives and sales targets we can help your business build meaningful relationships with the local community by creating authentic experiences that bring new energy to a place and encourage people to explore and enjoy their neighbourhood.

We can help join the dots about what makes customers excited and co-create an experience-led, thoughtful and personal pop-up to help your business expand into new markets and grow your customer base.
