When was the last time you took a day or two off work? If you’re like most business owners that I meet, then you would like to be taking more holidays, but there’s never ever a good time to take them. ‘I can’t go on holidays because this is happening in the business,’ or, ‘I’ve got that big job on,’ or ‘A team member is going to be away.’ Your employees go on holidays whenever they like but the business owner never really seems to get around to it – surely there’s a secret to taking holidays for you, too?
As a business coaches, I believe there is one. The secret to taking holidays for business owners is you plan your holidays first. Before you plan any other activity, decide and schedule in some time out for you to recharge, renew and refresh. Choose where and when you want to go, and then go ahead and book your holiday.
The first time I first took a decent break away from my business when I had a big team of coaches, it was 18 months in the planning. The first thing I did was to plan the dates, then I booked the flights. Start by creating that vacuum – once those holidays are booked in, they’ll happen, if you don’t book them in, they won’t.
Work out when you are going to take holidays next year. Share the information with your business partner, with your spouse, with your kids. Start to lock in when you are going to take holidays in the next 12 months for you and your family.
