The School of Human Movement Studies of University of Queensland, in collaboration with the University of Sydney, is conducting research on physical activity promotion in the workplace. When the Improve Group Learning Solutions offered to participate in the focus group last year, employees who work in its Cleveland, Qld, head office were given a choice as to whether they want to stand or to sit at their desks during their working day. Most are now choosing to stand.
‘The “stand-up desks” are an ideal way to engage our employees in the initiative,’ said Managing Director, Bob Carter. ‘It has raised our staff awareness related to their health, and we were surprised by the immediate buy-in to the idea.’

‘We quickly realised other benefits including an increase in team worth and communication. Team members no longer had to make a conscious effort to get out of their chairs – they simply walk to the next person and make decisions in real time.
‘As a result, we’ve seen a significant positive effect on our culture, teamwork, productivity and employee satisfaction.’

The Improve Group was last year’s winner of The Redlands Small Business Awards and is seen as an employer of choice.
