Western Australia to reopen its borders after two years

After implementing a hard lockdown and tight control over its borders, Western Australia has announced that it is finally reopening its borders for fully-vaccinated individuals on 3 March. Those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine, including a booster shot, will be allowed entry into the state.

The decision comes as WA Government decided that it is prepared to handle the Omicron variant to open its borders again, after resisting calls for it to reopen for the past two years.

The move has been hailed by the Business Council of Australia who say the decision marks a significant milestone in the country’s post-COVID recovery.

“This is a good decision which will be incredibly welcome news for so many families and friends who have spent months separated from loved ones,” Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott said. “We urge the McGowan Government to remain committed to its revised reopening date of 3 March so people, families and businesses of all sizes have the confidence to plan and get on with their lives and operations.

“Ending border closures across the country is a critical step in maintain the momentum of Australia’s recovery, ensuring we can attract people, ideas and investment back to our shores,” Westacott added. “With all states and territories now moving to reopen their borders, it is more important than ever that we have consistent and easy to navigate rules across the country.”
