Brisbane-based furniture company SYSTM has won the “Best in Class” Award in the 2023 Good Design Awards, Australia’s highest honour for design and innovation.
The Good Design Awards are Australia’s peak international design awards and has been in the forefront of recognising architectural excellence and the critical role good design plays in creating a better, safer, and more prosperous future.
“To be recognised with an Australian Good Design Award tells the world this project not only represents design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria for design innovation and design impact,” Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards, said.
Earlier, SYSTM’s work in aged care furniture, in collaboration with Clandestine Design Group, was named the ultimate winner in the Product: Furniture and Lighting category just months after launching the new product.
“The project cleverly responds to design challenges to contribute to a better environment for carers and patients,” the Good Design Awards Jury commented. “The Jury commends the design team for creating a meaningful solution that clearly demonstrates a deep level of empathy for the most vulnerable people in our society.”
SYSTM is notable for being the first of its kind in the country, a direct response to the Aged Care Commission’s findings which found that aged care residents’ independence, dignity, and mobility were not priorities for many furniture makers.
“The genesis of this came from the Royal Commission asking our industry to do better, and we decided to take on that challenge,” SYSTM founder and director Ian Reinhardt explained in his acceptance speech.
SYSTM’s products can be easily dismantled for thorough and hygienic cleaning and on-site upholstery with its unique propriety key and bolt design. At the same time, it reduces environmental and monetary waste by significantly extending the chair’s life.
Since officially launching in May 2023, SYSTM continues to sell out of stock. Reinhardt has already turned his mind to a broad range of industry sectors that will also benefit from SYSTM’s innovative design.
“We knew there was a better way to create functional furniture, and this is it. SYSTM’s ability to refresh, remodel and revive means your furniture is always renewable and supremely hygienic,” Reinhardt said. “Our revolutionary design is better for people, the planet, and budgets. And perfect for commercial and hospitality environments, healthcare settings and residential living.”
Brisbane-based Clandestine Design Group, which is behind SYSTM’s industrial design, has received 13 Australian International Design Awards of Excellence awarded by the Australian International Design Awards.
“We are incredibly proud to be recognised by the Good Design Awards for SYSTM’s innovation and impact,” Clandestine founder and director, Neil Davidson, said. “No detail went unnoticed, with every dimension of the chair providing optimal comfort while maintaining the highest standard of hygiene.”
Earlier this year, SYSTM was also named a finalist for Furniture Design of the Year at the Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards.
