Craig West is a strategic accountant who has over 20 years’ experience in advising business owners. His background as a CPA in public practice has provided invaluable experience in the key issues of concern to business owners and the strategies to build, maximise, protect and extract wealth as a business owner.
Following six years of study to gain two masters degrees, Craig focused on capital-gains tax (CGT) for business sales, advising several NSW accounting practices and their clients on strategic management of taxation issues. This experience formed a very strong view that business owners – and often their advisors – were unprepared and unaware of the steps required to prepare a business for exit.
In 2004, Craig started to build a specialised advisory practice focused on small-business owners to help them face the four key strategic issues that SMEs face as they grow:
protecting that equity
extracting the value you have built when you exit (business succession and exit planning)
Craig now acts as a strategic business and financial mentor for midmarket business owners and has written four critically acclaimed books educating business owners on employee incentives, succession planning, asset protection and exit strategies.
Craig has conducted numerous seminars and keynote presentations throughout Australia and internationally for Department of Industry, Tourism & Resources, MLC, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Sentry Financial Group, the Exit Planning Institute, the NSW Department of State & Regional Development, NSW Chamber of Commerce and CPA Australia. Craig’s practice Succession Plus now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and provides mentoring, advice and strategy for clients looking to prepare their business for a successful exit. Craig is the President of the Australian Chapter of the Exit Planning Institute and is currently working on a PhD in Business Succession and Exit Planning.
